Carys

11+, English Literature and Language

I attended The King’s (The Cathedral) School, Peterborough, a selective C of E comprehensive, where I was awarded the prize for top GCSE performer and academic prizes for both English and Classics at A-level. I read English and French at the University of Exeter where I received a First Class degree and a Dean’s Commendation. I turned this passion for academia towards primary education, training with UCL whilst teaching full-time in a Year 1 class during the pandemic. I have since worked as a Year 5 prep school teacher, with a specialism in English and French, supporting children through 11+ and 13+ entrance exams and scholarship papers. Now in my fifth year of delivering online tuition, I particularly enjoy getting to know each child’s strengths, targets and interests so that I can tailor sessions to their individual needs.

Teaching Experience

  • Three years of London Prep School Experience including preparing Year 5 pupils for 11+ in English, Year 8 pupils for 13+ and Scholarship papers in French.
  • Five years of private tuition experience, including successful applications to Eton, St Mary’s, Ascot (Scholarship), St Paul’s (Scholarship) and Francis Holland Sloane Square.
  • Two years of KS1 teaching experience including phonics and early Maths interventions and online phonics tuition.
  • Classroom and private tuition experience of supporting children with SEND and EAL including CPD to best support pupils with dyslexia and experience of Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Interests

I am passionate about the outdoors and spend as much time as possible running or in the sea. Having previously represented Great Britain for sailing, I continue to compete but also enjoy kitesurfing and surfing. I remain an avid reader and also enjoy writing short stories. Since leaving full time teaching, I have learnt Spanish and will begin learning a third additional language in 2024.
